When Anjali Prathapachandran approached the Bangalore police with a complaint against her husband, the police initially took it as a case of harassment. But when she divulged more details about her husband, the police allegedly tried to hush up the matter.

The reason was the same police station had verified her husband, Prathapachandran's antecedents earlier, and issued a clean chit to his passport application. However, the man was already holding multiple Indian passports.

Anjali said she had married Prathapachandran in Kerala on May 7, 1998. Their married life ran smooth for the first five years, but later he started demanding money from her parents. When his harassment became unbearable, she complained to the police.

The woman claimed that the Kodigehalli police tried to suppress the matter instead of registering a case under the Passport Act. Anjali further claimed that she had enclosed the copies of three of Prathapachandran's passports along with her complaint.

The enclosed copies were of two passports issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and one issued by the regional passport office in Bangalore. The Kodigehalli police had reportedly checked Prathapachandran's antecedents before the third passport was issued.

Prathapachandran earlier ran a liquor business in Dubai. The couple had been staying in Sahakaranagar. Kodigehalli police inspector K Chandrashekhar said he joined the police station six months ago, and was unaware of the clearance given to Prathapachandran's passport (F 1234118). He said a case would be registered under the Passport Act.
