The global economic slowdown seems to have hit Indians working in West Asia hard.

According to information provided by the overseas Indian affairs minister, Mr Vayalar Ravi, to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, upto 1.5 lakh Indian workers have returned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) owing to the global downturn.

While West Asia has always been seen as a region which provides lucrative jobs to Indians, the picture isn’t so rosy anymore.

With the global economic slowdown affecting the execution of projects in the UAE, between 50,000 to 1,50,000 workers are estimated to have returned to India, Mr Ravi told the Lok Sabha.

The minister said that most of the workers who have returned have done so on leave without pay with the expectation that they would return once the situation improves.

Further, Mr Ravi said that among other countries where Indians have been affected because of the slowdown are Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Regarding Indians working in the United States, the minister said that they are mostly professionals and so the loss of jobs is somewhat mitigated by the fact that they are needed by their employers.
