In her death five-year-old Janani has given the gift of life to her father. On Wednesday, Janani was caught in a road accident and declared brain dead.

When the doctors discussed organ donation with her parents, they found Janani's father Chandrasekhar was suffering from a renal failure and desperately needed a kidney transplant.

They decided there could be no better recipient for Janaki's kidneys.

"As a child's kidneys will be small, we thought we'd transplant both kidneys en block to the father," said J Mohanasundaram, Dean, Madras Medical College Hospital.

Janani's uncle Srinivas says: "It's a critical situation. The father is down with kidney failure right when his child is about to die. They didn't know what else to do, and decided to keep the child's kidneys."

It's an emotional moment for doctors as well. Only recently the Tamil Nadu government had simplified the procedure and gave priority for organ transplants from blood relatives.
